Custom Pool Deck Installation in Oakland County, MI

Pool deck installation in Oakland County costs between $8,000 and $40,000 depending on pool size, material choice, and scope of surrounding patio work. Higher Ground Landscaping designs and installs custom stone and paver pool decks that are slip-resistant, heat-reflective, and visually stunning -- engineered specifically for the demands of poolside environments in Michigan.

Pool decks face unique challenges that standard patios do not. They must drain away from the pool to prevent dirty water from flowing back in. They need to stay cool underfoot on hot July days. The materials must resist damage from chlorine, salt, and pool chemicals. And the surface must provide grip when wet to prevent slips and falls.

Tony Barash has installed pool decks across Oakland County since 1996, working closely with pool contractors to coordinate timing, grading, and drainage. We use light-colored pavers and natural stone that reflect heat, tumbled or textured finishes that provide grip when wet, and bullnose coping stones that create a safe, finished edge around the pool perimeter.

What We Install

Stone Paver Pool Surrounds

We install interlocking concrete pavers, travertine, and bluestone around in-ground pools with proper slope, drainage, and edge restraint. Paver pool decks offer the best combination of beauty, safety, and durability. We use tumbled or textured finishes exclusively for wet-foot traction. Most pool surrounds range from 400 to 1,000 square feet.

Pool Coping Installation

Pool coping is the cap stone on the pool's bond beam, creating the transition between pool wall and deck. We install bullnose, square-edge, and tumbled coping in matching or contrasting colors. Coping must be installed with flexible mortar that withstands pool movement and freeze-thaw cycles.

Poolside Patio & Lounging Areas

Beyond the immediate pool surround, we build extended patio areas for lounging, dining, and entertaining. These areas often include seating walls, built-in planters, outdoor shower pads, and transitions to the main yard.

Natural Stone Pool Decks

Travertine, bluestone, and limestone create stunning pool decks with natural variation. Travertine is especially popular because it stays cool in direct sun and has a naturally non-slip surface. Natural stone pool decks cost $20 to $35 per square foot installed.

Drainage Integration

Pool deck drainage is critical. The deck must slope away from the pool at 1/4 inch per foot minimum. We install channel drains at the deck perimeter to capture runoff and route it to the yard or storm system.

Slip-Resistant Surface Options

Every pool deck material we install is selected for wet traction. We use tumbled concrete pavers, flamed or bush-hammered natural stone, and textured porcelain tile -- never polished or smooth surfaces near water.

What Makes Pool Decks Different

Heat Reflection

Dark pavers absorb heat and become painfully hot. We use light-colored materials that stay 20 to 30 degrees cooler than dark stone in direct sun. Travertine and light concrete pavers are the top choices for Michigan pool decks.

Chemical Resistance

Pool chemicals damage certain stones over time. We select materials rated for pool chemical exposure and apply sealers that create a barrier against absorption, preventing discoloration and surface breakdown.

Michigan Freeze-Thaw

Pool decks face extreme freeze-thaw stress from being constantly wet during swimming season then freezing solid in winter. Our base preparation, material selection, and drainage prevent water from sitting under pavers during freeze cycles.

Pool Deck FAQ

How much does a pool deck cost in Michigan?

Pool deck installation costs $15 to $35 per square foot for pavers and $20 to $45 for natural stone. A typical pool surround (500 to 800 sq ft) costs $8,000 to $25,000. Larger projects can reach $40,000+.

What is the best material for a pool deck in Michigan?

Travertine and light-colored tumbled concrete pavers. Both stay cool underfoot, provide excellent wet traction, resist pool chemicals, and withstand freeze-thaw cycles.

Can pavers be installed around an existing pool?

Yes. We regularly replace old concrete, brick, or deteriorated surfaces around existing pools with new pavers and coping for a complete transformation.

Do pool deck pavers get slippery when wet?

Not when the right materials are used. We exclusively install tumbled, textured, or flamed-finish materials that provide excellent grip even when wet.
